Dad had the kitchen on a separate soak away due to the amount of water and detergents upsetting the biology of the tank.

Yes. We've never had a problem.

Aren't there better ways to clean a septic tank ?

I do. Never thought about it before.

Why should it be any worse than squirting a bit of Fairy into a bowl?

My understanding is that they don't use much water.
