I'm looking to paint my chest of drawers which is the same material as the one here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=SALUS+PROGRAMMABLE+ROOM+THERMOSTAT&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1
It does, however have some one or two mm scratches on the top. My question is, will i be able to sand it down and then re paint it? i'm not really sure how they are made and i don't want to sand the top laminate layer off to reveal a cheap unpaintable material underneath

You could skim the scratches with filler the give the filler a light sanding ( by hand ) and then paint it.

arrr, that's such a good idea and so simple, why didn't I think of that
It may need a couple of coats though, tandh.

that's fine, I've got two pots of the stuff that I need to use up anyway, forgot I had them and I've run out of time to get a refund. I'm so excited to see the finished effect. Thank you sweetie x
Your welcome, hope it turns out well.

on melamine foiled furniture, three bits of advice from experience. The first is to thoroughly clean and degrease it before painting, the second is that a specialist undercoat is worth using for durability and the third is that a coat or so of varnish (non yellowing) over the top will again aid with durability. So far as the paint goes, multiple thin coats are better than one thick one.

thanks woofgang, i'll use sugar soap to clean it then, that stuff is just brilliant, only just discovered it. I've brought a two in one furniture primer and paint, and I was going to use a foam roller to do it. Do you think that's a good idea? I used it to gloss a piece of wood and it gave such a nice finish
Give it a go..... its sounds good!
