to other taxi firms around the UK, who have self-employed drivers?

I dont know how it works with Uber, but most firms charge the owner taxi driver a weekly rent, for giving out the work, with no holiday pay etc.
I suppose taxi fares will be going up then.

Dont know much about them TWR, only that the black cab drivers have lost a lot of trade, and complaining that these Uber drivers, dont know London very well, or speak good enough English.

So how come they are allowed, when the black cab drivers have to do 2/3 years, riding about on a scooter/

Thats interesting Baldric, but doubt they would want to lose London.

Dosent Uber have a system, where people can get a cab quick with a mobile app, or similar?

I think taxi drivers in cities here and the US do ok. They decide how much they need to earn and then go home when they've made it. (That's according to QI - I don't know taxi drivers well enough to ask them personally. )

Sorry Trt, should have re-read your post.x
since the rise of uber, it's become almost impossible to use the short stay car park at Birmingham international, because it's full of uber cabs waiting for fares ftom the airport. I've had loads of moans at virgin trains about this but they don't appear to care.

When I did a stint of taxi driving, after returning from working abroad, I used to pay the taxi company £150.00 a week, for receiving fares/jobs over the radio, and that's all you got.

Drivers had to buy their own radio, Insurance, Criminal check certificate, illuminated roof taxi sign, taxi logo door stickers, etc, which all in all wasn't cheap.

I had to work 80+ hours a week to make a decent living, and if you were off the road 2/3 days, you still had to pay the weekly rent.
