I don't want to bother my friend with questions as I know she is worried herself.

Her baby was born 9 weeks early at 5lb 4oz, he was born early due to mothers diabetes going out of control.

Does anyone have any idea how long he will be in hospital? I know he is currently having help breathing and is in special care.

Thanks for any help.

hiy, my dughter ws born at 30 weeks. They told us to roughtly plane for her to be in until her due date. However, she was redt to come home at 7 weeks old. She wasn't even as heavy as your friend baby is now when she came home

I don't think there's a cleare cut answer Islay, depends greatly on how his breathing goes and of course feeding and weight.

Better he stays there that bit longer to get a good solid start.

Your friend and yourself must be worried of course but he's in the best hands.

Oh I know he is in the best hands Mamya, I was wondering if they would keep in him until what was his due date.

No!
Weeks rather than days.
Due date used to matter (on paper at least), but really it's about the baby's health and strength.
I know of twins that were born even more premature than 9 weeks early and weighing not much more than a kilogramme. They were in intensive care for many weeks and otherwise in hospital beyond that. They survived and are now very healthy teenagers. Another born about 8 weeks early was many weeks in hospital and has continuing health problems of unknown nature now aged four - there is apparently no reason to think premature birth was the cause rather than the other way around.
My son was 8 weeks early and was in for two weeks
within my lifetime, being born 8-10 weeks early was effectively a death sentence for a pre-term baby. now babies are viable much earlier than that (the record is more than 20 weeks). 5lbs is a good size, the medicos have doubtless got this under control, and whilst nothing is certain there's probably little cause for real concern.
The mothers diabetes will need to be under control as well as the babies being safe before they come home.
