As far as I'm aware, the sought after ones are AA01 .... and then the lower the 6 digit number after, the better :)

I read somewhere that the first £5 printed was given to the queen and the next 16 to other important people, don't know who or if this is true. That would mean the first note available would be AA17

You are correct, insofar as the first note goes to the queen, but the numbering system is as follows:
The first note issued is AA01 000001, the next one is AA01 000002, then AA01 000003 .... etc .... so if the first 16 are given out to special dignitaries; then the first available note would be AA01 000017.
