That is part of the smart meter - a desktop (or tabletop, wherever you like) monitor that makes it easy for the consumer to view their energy usage. It is given to the householder when the meter is installed.

I'm just surprised that so many people need a box to tell them that when you switch something on, it uses energy and costs money.....
I think I'm "smart" enough to have worked that out.....
I'm very energy-conscious but I'd still find it interesting to see how much each individual item uses. Perhaps I should get out more. :o)

The Smart mters I was talking about are the ones that replace the old ones aninitiald give your supplier monthly readings. According to the Oct Which Mag the initial roll-out was due on 17th Aug but was put back until the 30 Sept so assume its now up and running. I've had a Owl for a few years but that was giving 40-50 units more per month than the actual monthly true readind. I have just joined my second Big Switch and thes deals give good Tariffs.
Yes, the smart meters you refer to do replace the existing meters (gas and electric) and come with an indoor monitor to allow you to see the usage easily and in 'real time' and money.
BJS...no, the new wireless smart meter network (using the new second-generation smart meter) has been delayed yet again...a new date is to be confirmed. First-generation meters can still be installed for twelve months after the new network eventually goes live. However, the older smart meters may not be compatible with the new network and may turn "dumb" if you change suppliers....so back to square one.
That's why I'm not interested in them.
Smart meters are for the benefit of the suppliers not the consumer. If you are a sensible person that only uses gas and electricity when you need to you won't save a single penny.

Perhaps some of you found my answer a little misleading or confusing.
The SMART METER replaces your OLD meter under the stairs (or wherever).
The SMART METER sends the readings to the electric company so you don't need to have the meter read by the meter man.
When the SMART METER has been installed, they give you a little MONITOR device, that is plugged into a wall socket that shows you how much it is costing you per day to run all your electrical items. The MONITOR is not the SMART METER.
