I have a splinter in my finger that I cannot get hold of to pull out. I seem to remember hearing somewhere that there is something you can put on it to draw it out. Is there any truth in this idea?

I find that if you can not break or cut your way to a point where you can grab it, it can be left and the body will push it out eventually.

Thank you Baldric, lots to try there.
Put a plaster over it, that will draw it out in a few days.
It'll come out by itself. I was with a chippy for many years and he always left them alone.
Try a soap and sugar poultice. It's very effective if left in place for the recommended time. Poultices were commonly used years ago for this very purpose. There's nothing to beat it.

I agree about the soap and sugar
I swear by Black Jack, available from most chemists.
