Just curious as I drive past the HGV in the layby. Its 8.30pm, the curtains are drawn, what's it like in there? What does the average driver do for food and toilet? How many nights a week is spent in the cab?

When I was on tank at that time Driver stuck together helping each other with either flat tyres or whatever, then came the Agency drivers they had no time to stop, there was banter at truck stops I did not make a habit of stooping at them places because of cost and getting disturbed at all ours by tralier's change overs going on all night, it was a lonely life but you excepted that, you met some good people on the way but that was always shadowed by the ignorant lot, I tried every way I could with the public and their cars breaking down that was also a part of the job we were in, there was a bus full of pensioners on the A19 Near Hartlepool, the bus has a flat Tyre, I protected the rear of the bus with my own hgv as that area there was no hard shoulder, there was a whip round but I refused, I wanted to make sure that no-one ran into the back of the bus, today you have to be a moving office, some HGVs have a Fax machine for details of their next pick up the transport office ringing you up to ask how far are you from the job, how long will it take you, are you tipped, why has it taken you so long, if some people call that easy, I will eat straw with a donkey, other people have their own views & are under the impression that it's a fantastic job, I know different but I could handle the nastiness.
To add, the toughest are the ones that has to load 25 tonnes by hand in the rain / wind / snow on a Flat bed trailer not the covered ones you see nowadays.

I'm curious because quite a few stop i our local lay-bys and as I drive past I wonder what sort of life it is.

One of them pulled over into the outside lane to let me out of the side turning the other day. It was a busy morning and I was so grateful. When I got to work I emailed his company to thank him. Sounded as though they'd never had a nice email in their lives. I'm pleased it cheered them up.
Maydup, you are one of a few, HGV Drivers are their own worst enemy, people call them wherever you go, the old farts of the job drive with caution, the new glory boys have a lot to learn.
Takes a while to pass one of these when they're plodding along at 100kph.

Morn Oz and all, that's one I did not see when we were over OZ, I'd seen the artics but not the trains, I understand they use the likes of Bruise's Highway! I was talking to a bloke that was getting ready to travel from Mount Druitt to Cairns, I asked him how long it would take him, I'm sure he said a 3 days, people do not realise the size of of OZ, It's massive as I know.
Yep Twr Mt Druit to Cairns 3 days. That's only 2/3rds of the distance bottom to top.

Had a young Scots fella working for me in Sydney, asked him what his plans were for the weekend. "I might drive up to Townsville and check it out"

"Cya in 2 weeks time" was my reply ;-)
We hired a camper from Bris, I had plans to drive up to Cairns, the plans backfired as I under estimated the distance, typical Brit, we met some very helpful people on our journey, my brother Died when we were out there, as it happen, today 3 years ago.
Lots of interesting country down under TWR. Anything from alpine to tropical, throw in some desert, beaches, subtropical, open grassland, mountain ranges.
Got the lot, spread over many kilometers.
I have finished reading Bill Bryson's book about Oz...."Down Under" and when I finished it, I wanted to book the first flight there !

I am also re-reading all the Neville Shute books, many of which were set in the sheep country, north of Melbourne.

Fascinating country.
Mikey, don't put off what you would like to do now, I've been there 3 times for family, it's one hell of a size. I don't know if my assumptions are correct, but if you travelled From Sydney right the way around, I would think it would take you one year.
