My HP Deskjet Printer prints photo's etc. with a jerky movement which ends up with pictures with lines across them instead of an all round picture. when I print letters or crosswords not all the letters are solid. I use 123 cartridges but never had problems before.

Try a head clean - clogged nozzles are a cause of banding.

I would also do a head alingment.

One way to test for clogged heads is to print 4 solid boxes eg. in word. Colour one box cyan (blue), another magenta (red), another yellow and the last black.

Whichever doesn't print right is the one that is clogged.

If you post which model of printer, we can give instuctions how to clean/align the heads.
I agree with Tuvok with regard to head cleaning (and possibly realignment as well).

However we probably don't need to know the model number to provide instructions as access to 'Maintenance' (from a Windows PC) is usually the same across all makes and models of printers:

Click 'Start' and then on 'Devices and Printers'

Right-click on the icon for your printer and then select 'Printer Properties' (not just 'Properties')

Click on the 'Maintenance' tab

All relevant options should then be available to you.

I've tried the check alignment and clean the heads but it's still the same. Any other ideas. Thanks for trying.
Used to get the same problem and it often took 3-4 goes at clearing the nozzles before it actualy cleared and the print quality returned to normal.
As Alavahalf suggests, keep trying!

I've known it take 8 head cleaning attempts before the problem started to clear, with a further 3 goes before everything was really perfect!

Thanks very much all. I did 8 cleans with no change. I'll try again later.
