Best Way To Get To The Azores?

I fancy visiting the Azores next year but it appears to be a 6 hour layover in Lisbon or a 3 hour stop in Porto.
Have sent away for the Sunvil brochure as I understand they do trips.
Anyone used them? Any good? Any other suggestions?

Ryanair (from Stansted) and Azores Airlines (from Gatwick) both operate seasonal flights to João Paulo II Airport on São Miguel. (They both list the destination as 'Ponta Delgada').
