Thanks Murdo,

So just to be clear, I can attach a new keyboard with a USB cable to my laptop, and use it as if it belonged to the laptop.

Would a wireless mouse work as well?
The USB keyboard takes over - a wireless mouse would need an adaptor - a regular USB mouse is very cheap and takes over as the keyboard does.
yes to both
Logitech MK220 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
Product code:497/2880 (argos) i have this for my laptop
If the laptop has got bluetooth its also possible to use bluetooth kit (at least it is on my mac book) but hard on the batteries

Ivor, as a matter of interest, why do you have another keyboard attached, my excuse is I want a bigger one than the laptop.
same as you and my laptop is connected to a bigger monitor too so actually the laptop is not in front of the bigger screen, i only use it on its own not very often
