I find myself saying .... Ah bless her .... When for example a child has said or done something endearing, or bless you when I really mean thank you most kindly.

I realise however, that when I hear others use the phrase, it often makes me cringe. I'm not really wanting to bless people and must stop.

Bless your hearts. There, that's the last time I'm going to say it!

Oh yes, I say it then too! Why ever I do not know!
It is short for God Bless You. You are not doing any blessing by saying it.
'Bless' on its own is even worse, even more cringe-worthy!

Why do we need to ask God to bless people after they sneeze?

I shall stop doing this very day.
I think it's from the Plague. Sneezing was a symptom so "Bless you" was said.
I say it all the time. I said it to my cat earlier at his pathetic attempt to catch a moth...
