Bell Pepper Problem

my bell peppers have gone rotten at the bottom just as they started colouring up, I left them to a friend to care for while I went away for a couple of weeks, and am wondering if the watering was a bit hit and miss in that time or is it something more sinister ?

I agree, over- watering seems the most likely, with the best of intentions, no doubt.

many thanks to both of you, I did suspect that, now I notice a few new peppers coming so will have to cross fingers and hope the plants have settled down.
