I have no idea. But as to the best of my knowledge you can't change gender on paper I would guess the marriage remains valid.
Question Author
yes there is - gender recognition certificate
The short and long answer is Yes. No need for further input.
Question Author
well as i iasked "does the marriage remain valid or would the couple have to get re-married" the "yes" isn't a particularly clear answer :)
Ahh, I stand corrected I thought it was one of the bug bears of reassignment.
Clear enough to me.
Question Author
as far as i can tell the GRC process is incredibly arduous, so it probably is a bugbear still
Complex area, not sure if this helps...

//People present evidence to a Gender Recognition Panel, which considers their case and issues a Gender Recognition Certificate.[2] If the person involved is in a legally recognised marriage they will be issued an 'Interim Gender Recognition Certificate',[3] which can then be used as grounds for annulment of the marriage, but otherwise has no status. After annulment, a full Certificate will be issued. //

Jackdaw, two questions one answer!?!?!

Question Author
well could i possibly trouble you to be a bit clearer please Jackdaw?
One question, one answer.
Question Author
so they'd have to get re-married jackdaw? or the marriege remains valid?
It remains valid.
JD is answering one of your questions but you have to guess which one.
The answer to the first question answers the second one. Get a grip!
I know a couple in exactly that position, and they have had to go through a fairly harrowing divorce. The ex-man couldn't see why "his/her" wife wouldn't want to stay married to "him/her". The wife was even more confused than I am.
The marriage remains valid although many couples then divorce.

i also have friends in this position, although they are engaged at the moment. The transition is not yet complete and they are getting married as man and woman, and will want to stay together afterwards. I ws not asking on their behalf (because they probably know the answers anyway, but on mine because i was curious and politeness does not really allow me to ask
