The difference is that the EU is a real thing, whereas the British Empire now exists only in certain people's fantasies.

And besides, the totals are wrong -- or certainly have no semblance to Gold medal totals, since only 307 gold medals were given out in the first place (counting team medals as one gold).
// The difference is that the EU is a real thing, whereas the British Empire now exists only in certain people's fantasies //

But the similarity is that neither had a team in the Olympic games.

total medals jim, and I think the EU is closer to fantasy land than you think.
In the future, perhaps -- but anyway. The entire graphic is a pretty pathetic attempt to make the EU look bad, although I'm sure it was really just Wheeler's attempt to be funny.

One doesn't need to 'attempt', the EU is bad.
Gee, some folk (twitterers particularly it seems) can't wait to discover something they can moan about next.

It's an interesting grouping of the data, and should simply be treated as such.
What on earth is deeply offensive, really, some people need to get a life.

Rather looks to me like it was tongue in cheek and there have been some sense of hunour failures among those still chomping on sour grapes!
"It's an interesting grouping of the data..."

Yes. The London Telephone Directory used to be grouped A-D; E-K; L-R and S-Z. That was interesting too, but far more useful.
But totally unentertaining.
It is a fun graphic, but I do not believe it is accurate.
As has already been pointed out, the totals add up to more than 307.
And have they really looked at the birthplace of all the US winners to count them in our US Ametican colonies or rest of the world?
" The difference is that the EU is a real thing"

only on paper...
Here's another interesting regrouping of the data :-

People called Jean-Claude Juncker : 0
Anyone else : 974
Well surely it has to be a real thing Baz, otherwise we wouldn't be able to leave it ... :/

Also enjoyed that last one though, ludwig!
Strangely Mr Junckers was quoted in the papers today as saying that national borders were the worst thing politicians ever invented.

Leaving aside the fact that many of them were not “invented” by politicians, it gives a little insight into the man’s psyche. I suppose he didn’t mind national borders being in evidence when he presided over Luxembourg’s creation of probably the most extensive tax haven in the EU. It didn’t seem to bother him that companies transferred vast chunks of their income across the borders he despises to the Grand Duchy to take advantage of their low tax rates (and in passing make Luxembourg the richest per capita nation in the EU).

He is also quoted as saying that nationalism is a symptom of the populist movement and the will of the populists (i.e. the electorate) must be resisted by all means.

Is it any wonder the UK voted to leave?
