Can anyone recommend any decent restaurants, things to do/see?

We'll do Chatsworth, Bolsover Castle and as recommended by New Judge, the Crich Tramway Museum.

Anything else within a 45 minute drive?

Thanks :)

Thanks Mushroom. We went to Castleton a couple of years ago and loved it.
This is quite an historical place but I warn you, you must like tapestries

Rowley's in Baslow
If you're there on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday, take a trip on the canal:

Hardwick Hall is close by

. . . as is Renishaw Hall

If you're a fan of railway history (and in the area on a Saturday or Sunday), Barrow Hill Roundhouse is a must:

Bakewell's a lovely little town:

Matlock Bath is very pleasant, although it can get packed with tourists at times:

If you don't know Sheffield, it's well worth exploring and only a quarter of an hour away from Chesterfield by train:

A great pub/restaurant on the Chatsworth Estate. (I was the guest there of the guy who had helped the Duchess of Devonshire to redevelop it. He related how he'd had to hold her hand, to support her, as she stood on top of a pile of rubble to check that the view from the windows would be exactly as she wanted it to be):

TripAdvisor's restaurant recommendations:

Yes, 'chico's recommendation for the Devonshire Arms is good. Been there, v.good.

There is a nice Turkish in Chesterfield called the Ephasus (easy to find on TripAdvisor). If you want a Wetherspoons go to the Portland Arms rather than the Spa Lane Vaults. The former is a Wether Hotel and is quite nice (as Wethers go); the latter (on the hill up towards the Crooked Spire) is a dive and seems to be frequented by people who have recently been evicted on "Can't Pay We'll Take it Away".

Matlock Bath has "The Heights of Abraham" nearby with a cable car ride to the top. It also has Masson Mills (something to do with cotton milling and Richard Arkwright) and the Peak District Lead Mining Museum.

Y'all have a good time !!!

Thanks all. I have an irrational fear of heights so not sure about the cable car at HofA, is it still worthwhile if you don't go on it?
Matlock Bath isn't that exciting, rocky :(

Well, we did Bolsover Castle yesterday and Chatsworth today. Quite impressed with both but especially Chatsworth House, what a place.

My legs are about to fall off.

Crich tomorrow, all being well.
I was in Chesterfield once - nice railway station. I think that I was going home to Scotland from my brother's in Nottingham. Not as nice as Perth but it seemed okay.

Enjoy your holiday :-)
if you liked Chatsworth you must try and go again at Christmas
Question Author
I bet it's beautiful at Christmas, alas, it's a bit too far for a day trip.
Restaurants in Chesterfield.... nonnas, and Calabria, and Koo, Chatsworth Rd, Libby's for a coffee outside. Peak Edge, was Red lion at Stanage, Rowleys in Baslow or Piedanels in Bakewell. Good food, higher end.
