That would depend on how you drew the comparison, though.
At the very least, would you agree with addressing the topic, no matter the age, if it comes up naturally? What should be done if a teacher, for example, undergoes transition? Or if a child raises the subject because either they are or, more likely, a family member is transgender and they want to ask questions about it to the school?
It seems to me that in the first two scenarios at least the school has no choice but to talk about the topic openly. At any rate, while perhaps the better thing to do is to wait for the opportune moment for the really young children, teaching children about transgenderism more formally could easily form a part of the sex and relationships education that tends to happen around the ages of 10-12.

Get it into your head that there are people who, through the random nature of genetics and gestational environments, are born this way. They are real people with real feelings and real lives. The only problem they have is the failure of the ignorant and prejudiced to accept them.

Naomi is right that "tolerance" was my word, used twice on the last page. I think it's appropriate because many people today, for one reason or another, have negative attitudes towards transgenderism and trans* people. I think it's important to work to change those attitudes, but realistically this is impossible to achieve any time soon for everybody. In those cases I'd settle for a more modest objective of people not allowing their views on transgenderism to influence their actions towards transgender people. I would have thought that this position -- "I don't 'agree with' transgenderism but I wouldn't want those views to get in the way of trans* people living their lives freely" -- is the very definition of tolerance.

I agree that it should be taught in school -- it's just that overcoming the attitudes of people like TTT isn't going to happen overnight. Like a broken record, he posts the same thing whenever this topic comes up, and like an insane person I keep trying to persuade him otherwise with the same effects, ie none whatsoever. It won't stop me in future either, because views like that have to be challenged and can't be left alone.
Anyway, the point is I'd far rather have respect than tolerance, but I'd still rather have tolerance than the ignorance and bigotry that TTT et al display.

I have no objection to explaining aspects of reality to children. Their questions should be answered. I do, however, object to people who thoughtlessly and selfishly mess with little minds by banging their particular drum and shoving aspects of reality down the throats of little children way before they’re ready to learn, or indeed, capable of understanding. The children are my priority – not the drum-bangers!
