I have recently bought some local honey from someone near me that keeps bees. I've bought "local" before but from a different person & it was absolutely lovely. This honey is tasteless & doesn't even taste like honey st all. Just excessively sweet. What would be the cause of this? I'm disappointed as it definitely wasn't cheap. Any ideas?

The taste of honey depends on the flowers that the bees have visited to gather the nectar. A hive near a lot of scented flowers will have honey that tastes of those flowers. A hive near a lot of 'plain' or scent free flowers will have less taste. It also varies from year to year just as the grapes that make wine vary with the 'vintage' some years are good some are not so good.
You can get heather, clover, (oil seed) rape or blossom honey - all taste different.
why not have a friendly chat to the local producer - perhaps he/she is able to tell you more and after all, it is just down to personal taste - or, you may have got a 'bad' jar in which case a good producer will replace it.

thanks for your replies. It wasn't a "bad" jar as a friend of mine bought two jars & she said the same as me. As the lady lives about 9 miles each way from me I will just accept what has happened & not buy from her again.

Unfortunately, there is a huge business for crooks selling fake honey. The fact that someone keeps bees doesn't always mean that the honey is always genuine. Or 100 % genuine.
