Because of the stupidity of morons it has become necessary to try and save a breed of dog from incestuous breeding. The people that do this are little better than those that abuse animals. We should ban this whole pedigree cobblers and ban dog shows that celebrate some warped view of "perfection". They are not dog lovers they are fetishist loonies, if you want a perfect dog buy a china model. A dog is not an ornament. Rant over!

The problem lies with the Kennel Club and its often outrageous "breed standards" - the written down version of how the KC believes a particular breed of dog should look. There will be changes - but they are not going to happen overnight.

anyone who wants to "show" their dog at a dog show type event is not fit to own a dog in my opinion. They are not dog lovers they use dogs to create a social life because they are in no position to create one for themselves.
I agree Tora (don't faint!). I also think it's a form of snobbery / oneupman ship.
Both my dogs have been cross-breeds and were healthy hounds.

I have no problem with people having pedigree dogs and showing them. Dogs are sociable animals and usually enjoy dog shows.

But the real problem is that we are tinkering with these breeds for purely aesthetic reasons with no apparent concern for the health of the dogs.

I was at the vet recently with my boy cat and a guy was waiting whilst the vets operated on his Bulldog. She couldn't give birth normally as the heads of the puppies were too big - she was having a caesarian. It was going to be risky operation because, being a Bulldog, she had breathing problems. He said that he will get £1500 for each puppy. It's crazy.

Any time that humans play god with nature we make a mess.

Totally agree with you TTT and this has always been my belief. I can't forget the state of that poor German Shepherd at Crufts this year and how it was deemed ok by the stupid judges when it was so obviously in pain. This has long been a bugbear of mine.

didn't see that JB, what happenned? I never watch dog shows, they just appall me.
I hate Crufts with a vengance TTT and never watch it, but this German Shepherd received a lot of publicity this year and was in fact on a thread on AB too. It's back legs were very bent and it was obviously in pain on walking and running, but the judges praised it and I think it won best of breed!! I tried emailing the Kennel Club about this using the email address given on their website and to this day it still won't send, but I will keep trying.
Thanks for saying exactly what I feel TTT. The cretins actually use animals for their purpose and monetary gain IMO and have no caring interest in animals at all. Dispose of the 'breeders' and save the animals. Breeders if we have to have 'em should be licenced and all animals so eyed or neutered that owners have. The sooner the better but don't hold your breath as animals on this planet count for fffff***ckall. Hope that word gets past the censor!

There is no way that this dog would be able to chase and bring down criminals. It is so sad to see it like this.

Wolf63 the animals don't get a choice..sigh
Just my twopennyworth. I agree.

However my other beef with dogs is calling a cross breed by a combo name. They are just as lovable being mongrels.
The problem lies with the Kennel Club and its often outrageous "breed standards" - the written down version of how the KC believes a particular breed of dog should look. In the case of German Shepherds, until recently the breed standard called for sloping hind quarters, which led to many dogs suffering hip dysplasia. Then there is the breathing problem with bulldog-type canines. Unfortunately, there's money in it for the breeders - get a Crufts rosette and up go the stud fees/value of puppies.
Personally I think the KC should be closed down!
Totally agree Fred, they are the instigators IMO of a lot of the problems with dogs and to what 'standard' they should be bred. Lots have said it before and I'm sure it will be said again.
They can't charge as much money for a mongrel, though.

There are breeds that have evolved and developed...naturally...over many centuries. It's when Man decides to make "improvements" that things go wrong.
Intersting history of the bulldog...scroll down for early photos. Many of the changes are relatively recent.

'Personally I think the KC should be closed down!' Could not agree more.
I agree with everything that's been said on here but if there wasn't a market for them the breeders wouldn't do it. The people buying them need to educate themselves and if they really care about the quality of the dog's life they shouldn't buy them. And yes the KC is a disgrace and not fit for purpose.
Question Author
thanks all, I'm torn for BA but fred edges it, wolf that German Sheppard looked crippled to me, if that's best of breed then there is something very wrong. You are correct Lady, if people didn't buy them then they wouldn't be bred. I always get rescue dogs for a donation. Just lost one of mine so my other one is lonely so we are looking round and just seen a love little jack today so I'm waiting for a home inspectioin now.
I agree with your opening post, ToraToraTora.
The Kennel Club and its adherents should be ashamed of themselves.
