Next door's neighbour had two beautiful red setters. One had to be put down last year due to cancer and I just found out the other one (bless him) had been unwell but last Tuesday died in his sleep.

Sista and I had watched him (dog and owner) walking down the street when poor dog had diarrhoea - I knew then dog was ill.

Neighbours loved these dogs but do have one little boy and are expecting a little girl in a cuppla weeks. They will get another dog eventually.

That is sad J, they do become such a big part of your life.
Very sad. Such lovely dogs .
I know the feeling. My long time handsome, faithful, friend is destined to go tomorrow. I'm more than a little sad tonight. :o(

I am sure you are Naomi - very sad to lose a "family" member.
I'm still hoping against hope that the vet will send him home again.
Question Author
well, as everybody would say - if the little guy is in pain - you wouldn't like him to suffer any more.
sorry to hear this, they are part the family.
jennyjoan, no, of course I wouldn't want him to suffer and I don't think he is suffering particularly. His head is fine but sadly he is very old and his body is weak and letting him down.

Well maybe he could dotter along for another wee while. Elderly people do it. Good luck with that.
jennyjoan, sadly I don't think so .... but I still hope the vet will send him home tomorrow.
Thinking of you Naomi.x
Thanks for your kindness all. Bedtime for me - and him. x
Night.
I hope you have him home by now Naomi. If not, try to remember that you did the right thing. Fortunately, we are allowed to let pets go when they are no longer able to have an acceptable minimum standard of life.

Wildwood. Thank you. I DO HAVE HIM HOME!!!! I spent the morning sitting on the floor crying and cuddling him..... my husband put him in the car and I gave him a last little kiss ..... I came indoors, and thinking I have to be sensible and positive, cleared all his stuff away. I threw his bed and bedding in the trailer ready for a tip run, and his feeding bowls and toys in the bin, and then waited for my poor, sad, husband to return - what a rotten job he'd had. I couldn't believe my eyes when the car arrived and who should be peering out of the window but HIM - an injection later and with some new medication!! The vet said it might be only a few days or it could be longer, but HE is not in pain and, even though HE is a big dog and very elderly for a big dog (14), his quality of life is such that it's well worth trying a bit longer. We are so happy - I've retrieved all his stuff and spent the afternoon disinfecting that which has been in the bin - and he's munched down a big dish of fresh cod and rice so HE seems to be very happy too. :o)
Wonderful! Enjoy your time with him , however long it is, he sounds a lovely and lucky boy.x

Oh Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat for you Naomi. That happened to a woman I knew - the dog lived for another 2 years - 16 years old.
Thanks Mamyalynne. Happy days!!
jennyjoan, fingers crossed that we'll be as fortunate. He's such a lovely, waggy, boy - loves everyone.
Oh I know that pain, and Naomi enjoy so glad you have more time to spoil him xx
