Has anybody flown with Ryanair recently, I have just looked up cabin baggage sizes and it says "1 cabin bag up to 10kg maximum diamentions 55x40x20cms" plus 1 small bag up to 35x20x20cms but some people have told me that they take the first cabin bag but then put on a rucksack taking lots more, is this correct as I don't want to get to the airport to br told the rucksack has to go in the hold at £50

basically what they're saying is you can take aboard a wheelie bag and a handbag. It could be a rucksack as long as it fits the dimensions and the weight limit. Their planes aren't huge and don't have a lot of baggage space; and they don't want a lot of people checking luggage in for the hold, as loading and unloading takes time, makes them late and costs them more in airport charges.

Sometimes if there's a lack of space they have to put luggage in the hold even if it's the right size and weight, but in that case they won't charge you.
Both bags have to fit in the appropriate 'size guide' cages, if they ask you.

A rucksack might fit in the small bag cage, depending how big/full it is.

The good thing about the smaller bag is that it is not weight restricted - so I stuff all my heavy camera/electronics/books/etc in a camera bag that is exactly the right size. This makes it easy to then meet the 10kg limit on the bigger bag.
One tip - they very rarely 'size check' the carry-ons of people in the Priority Boarding queue.
I take a small suitcase and a beach type bag and like Dave I use it to put all my electrical's in it.

My bag has only ever been checked once.
Went with Ryanair last year to Portugal and I was worried about the size of the handbag that I even went out and bought a new small handbag (as mine are all tote sized) and they did not even check it!!!!
That size handbag is quite small and I could only get passports/tickets and my kindle in.

Thanks everybody for your answers, I will take my permitted bag plus I will chance a small rucksack and see what happens!
Maybe the smaller bag refers to any duty free bag you may get airside They did try and stop people a while ago from having these extra bags.
