Popular But Discontinued.

Have you noticed that some very popular products in supermarkets seem to be discontinued for no apparent reason? The latest example I've seen was Wollemi Shiraz at Sainsburys, which according to the assistants was was so popular it was flying off the shelf. When I tried to order a few bottles online I was told, you've guessed it, it's been discontinued. Surely this practice can't be to promote their own brands, because, it be frank you could use Sainsburys own red wine to put on your chips.

Mr Alba and I have frequent discussions about why I didn't buy something, told him it wasn't in stock and can only buy what is in stock (usually his favourite brand of razor blades)

it's more likely to happen with wine than with, say, tomato sauce because it's seasonal and there's only a finite supply: when the grapes are harvested, that's it. Then they have to wait for next year's vintage, and that may not be as good.

Wollemi Shiraz was produced by Tony Bainton in the Hunter Valley region of NSW.

Alas they seem to have dropped off the radar. Their website no longer exists.

They were a small family run vineyard, they may have sold out.

M&S used to do a Roast Chicken Pudding (hate Steak & Kidney!). Also a crumble topped cake to die for. Peanut Yorkies, Hagen Das peanut brittle ice cream........ I could go on.........

Has anyone else noticed you can't buy Findus frozen foods in supermarkets now either. It's Bird's Eye or shop's own label only mainly. I spotted a Findus product in the freezer of a local shop recently so they must still be in business, or it was very old stock.

I assume this is legal but it doesn't seem right. Over the months I've noticed that Tesco will stop selling an item and then some time later it returns, usually with "new product" signs plastered all over it, and the price has increased quite dramatically.

I've tried asking where lines have gone. The reply is always 'There is no demand for X, Y or Z'. I then say 'But I'm demanding it.' This is met with a blank look and a near shrug. :(
