I have made a dreadful mistake.
I have tried to strip the paint from my staircase and it's a dreadful mess
How much approx would it cost to replace the banister and spindles?
It's an average size semi

TIA

What have you been using to strip the woodwork?
Question Author
Paint stripper but it's all clumpy in the joints and it's all patchy
Question Author
To be honest I'm not sure how to remove the paint stripper
I have been using a scrapper and a triangle thing but it gets all stuck up with the paint
Try a hot air stripper and a combination shave hook.
Buy a cheap paint remover gas flame cannister, but dont set the house on fire.
It's a slow process. When I did mine I must have used at least 3 coats of paint stripper, a heat gun and various sanding tools.

I've got a hot air gun but I dare not use it as I've used so much paint stripper
I honestly wish I'd never started this thing
Ric, we had all our twiddly turned spindles replaced with plain square ones last autumn, twenty of them, and it cost £290. We kept the bannister and the newel posts top and bottom.
The bannister and newel posts shouldn't be too difficult a job to rub down and refinish, the spindles would be a nightmare..well, they would for me, I wouldn't contemplate doing them.
There are different paint strippers out there. you could try a websearch. I used one called strip away last time I needed one and it seemed to do a decent job. No stripper is perfect though (especially as any decent one is banned on H&S grounds) and liberal use of an abrasive paper is often a good idea. I can't believe you have done sufficient damage to require an expensive replacement though. Worse comes to worst you can always just paint all over the top again.
You could just cover the spindles with hardboard or grained ply, then paint or wood stain.
Assuming it's just one straight flight, ethandron's figure would seem about right. It's quite a time-consuming job.

Maybe around £350 if the handrail is replaced as well. Allow even more for turned spindles.
