Hello again after a couple of weeks absence. And I am late this week because SWMBO took me to Winchester ( beautiful cathedral etc) but for a weird reason. One of her friends organised for her husband to drive 4 tanks for short periods! Can you believe it?! And there were others joining in the fun!!! Add the fact that it lashed rain nearly all the time and the mud was inches thick ( literally) on my boots and you can guess just how much I enjoyed it. But SWMBO wanted me to seem to enjoy it so as not to spoil it for her friends. Oh well.
But now I still have one clue I can't understand ( there was another but it's been answered for someone else). " Junk stores set back, with variable percentage earned." I have R?y?l?y so royalty fits and that could be the percentage earned but I don't get anything else. Could one of you great people help me please.

junk = ROT; inside it we have LAY backwards (set), variable = y, as in algebra. So royalty

Thank you very much. You are ( I think) a new helper for me. So an extra thank you to you
steven
Pleasure. I've been around on AB in various guises for circa 10 years.
Question Author
Oh wow. Why " various guises"? Or ( as SWMBO would certainly say) am I being impertinent asking such a question?

I resign and then re-appear under another pseudonym.
The Official Secrets Act prevents me from elaborating...
You've already said too much ;-)
People who are banned or suspended are not allowed to re-register. If they do they usually give themselves away fairly soon and are removed. Sometimes there are technical difficulties. If you deactivate your account, either accidentally or on purpose, it seems to prove impossible to resurrect it. In those circumstances, if you have not transgressed Site Rules, I believe re-registration is permissible but you will need a different name.

Blimey! I never thought that the world of crosswords entertained people who might be banned. I shall certainly not share this info with SWMBO or I might find SHE bans me
It's not usually the crossworders who get banned... :o)
To be fair Fred said he left of his own accord, I was only playing - we aren't really dangerous Steven.

Well most of us.
I like working in Cheltenham Spa - such a lovely Regency town...
I also found this exchange interesting.....
May I ask a not quite related question please? Steven often refers to SWMBO. This is another bit of crosswordese that I cannot crack. It's obviously known to all the cognoscenti but we poor ignorant outsiders need help ( provided those not in the know are allowed secret information) to decipher the code.

She who must be obeyed?
Lay(set) reversed inside rot(junk)+ y(variable)
SWMBO cropped up in Hilda Rumpole, the wife of Horace Rumpole of Rumpole of the Bailey (first broadcast in 1975)
She who must be obeyed! Of course. Is this what steven calls his mother all the time, I wonder.
He may but the nice thing is he does it so respectfully.
I thought it referred to wives, not mothers.
It has become more connected with a wife yes, but of course in H Rider Haggard's "She" it was - mysterious white queen named Ayesha who reigns as the all-powerful "She", or "She-who-must-be-obeyed".

So a woman not to be argued with ;-)
