Does anyone know if Omeprazole can make you put on weight? Have been taking them a couple of years, 20 mg to begin with and this last year 40 mgs. My weight has gone up by about a stone last several months.

have just read through list of side-effects from my box, nothing about weight gain.

If it's weight has been added over the winter months, it's extra insulation :-)

That's a relief. I'll probably be on them for rest of my life due to acid reflux.( I hate having to take them) looks like I need to look at my diet carefully and exercise more! Thanks for your quick response Alba..
try looking at a min carbs - rich protein and veg diet - it's worked for me (see naomi's thread)....however, patsy, see your doc before embarking on this....I did it to lower blood pressure and the risk of Diabetes 2.....hopefully may be off the tabbies next month, am back down to 5mg of Rampiril a day.

It's more of a lifestyle and, quite frankly, I have cut right back on spuds, cakes, biscuits, sweet desserts, chocolate, ice-cream and rice, the occasional pasta, pasta being semi-ok with a slower release of carbs...

Thanks DTC, will have to do that. I have slipped back on my usually quite self -disciplined self! I'm not a big chocolate eater but weak with cakes and biscuits. Need to get walking more too, used to go with friend but her hip is playing up..Right, as from today I'm going to be a new me!...

Oh by the way DTC, well done for your good efforts in cutting down to improve your health!
had a thought about your friend with poorly hip - do either of you swim?
The water will help support her.

Hope the weather and your friend improve xx
Question Author
Yes Alba, my friend does go swimming. When the weather warms up I might join her. Can't say I'm a big fan of swimming! Maybe because I'm not a great swimmer. Thanks for your helpfulness :-)
thanks Patsy, jusholt on 3 stone off, need another 1.5 stones ideally - to get there, tight discipline and cutting right back on the wine.....not that I am an alcoholic - but maybe after my goddaughter's wedding this weekend and next.....
Not really an answer to your question but here goes: I have taken Omeprazole for a few years with no ill effects. Recently I have had two broken bones and have found out that a side effect of Omeprazole is Osteoporosis. Now I am being tested for bone density and am hoping I dont have to stop taking the drug.
