he was jailed in 1998 for the muder of Lin and Megan Russell but Levi Bellfield's name keeps cropping up. were he to be provably connected to this case, it would represent one of the longest miscarriages of justice in UK legal history (only topped by Jeremy Bamber if he too were to be proved innocent)

some miscarriages were short only because the victims were executed (Timothy Evans, for instance).
Reading the story it looks very possible. This sort of event shows why I can never support the death penalty. I am certain that when this case was being tried there were strident calls for him to be 'strung up'.
James Hanratty was long thought to be a victim of a miscarriage of justice, and they eventually dug him up to get some DNA. It proved he was guilty after all.
I remember this case very well, and there were witnesses for the prosecution who were drug addicts & one later charged with murder.

Hope they find the new DNA, and will prove his innocence.
I remember it well too, particularly as it happened in an area of Kent near to where I lived. It was a horrific case, almost unbelievably vile and the evidence against Stone has always been dodgy. I wonder if it could be solved more easily with the technology available if such a crime was committed today.
He was supposed to have shouted a confession to someone in a neighbouring cell while he was on remand. Seems very unlikely.
I remember before the verdict was announced that I wrongly predicted at my place of work that he would surely be found innocent.

It may sound silly but it was something to do with the relevance of a lawnmower.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

apparently the lawnmower was solen, and michael stone allegedly tried to sell it in chillenden on the day of the murders
Thanks mush, still not sure of the relevance in terms of damning evidence and why I placed such importance to it...
