I have to buy an all in one printer. I don't use the printer much and never print photos so a mono printer would do.

I am fed up of the ink cartridges drying out after very little use so would a laser machine suit me better?

I have never used laser printers before so pros and cons appreciated

Lasers are cheap to run, only slightly more expensive to buy, and have the major advantage that if you don't use them for months, the inkjets don't clog up (for fairly obvious reasons).

Does the 'drum' have to be replaced as well as the toner?
hc.......for me, no contest......Laser printer. Saves all that stain on your fingers when one changes the cartridges. A WIFI enabled printer need not be switched on ..EVER. Simple. e.g brother L2340DW series.
We have a laser one at work. They are magic - when you think that there is no ink left all you have to do is shake it violently and it works again, sometimes for weeks. Magic !
I abandoned inkjet printers 10 years ago because I reckon I used more ink cleaning the heads than I did printing and now I have a cpolour jaser jet. If you don't do a lot of printing the cartridge supplied with it will last you for years and, as The Chair says, they just work ie, no cleaning necessary etc. however long it is since you last used it. If you do happen to need to replace a cartridge they are not overly expensive, certainly not compared with ink.
I must say that I have had an Epson Stylus Photo R220 printer for years & although I do not print too often have never had a problem with ink drying out,is this unusual ? Also I bought a job lot of ink cartridges about 3 years ago, would they still be safe to use ?

I'm convinced! Laser it is :)
We have had a great run with a Samsung laser. Not a single problem in several years. But be prepared to pay almost as much for the replacement cartridge as the whole printer. The cartridge has the imaging drum built in.

Thanks, beso. It's got to the stage where the ink cartridges are more expensive than the printer, which works out very expensive if they dry up after very little use.
Just check what toner is supplied with the new printer - many seem to have a "starter cartridge" of about 25% of the full cartridge capacity.

This may still be OK - just check on the price of an original or third party replacement toner cartridge & factor that into the purchase price.
I don't know what we have and I don't know how it works but we pay £1.99 pm and like magic when our ink is running low new ones arrive in the post.
