I recently bought a new double bed which came with a lovely winter duvet which means I have one going spare. I've washed it so it's clean, and I was wondering what to do with it.I was thinking of the homeless people and wondered if they could use it but don't want to go into Manchester at night offering it to those sleeping rough. Is there a charity for the homeless that would take it off my hands, as I don't feel it's good enough to take to other charity shops. Many thanks.

Coffee for Craig are often about around Piccadilly Gardens, Morrison's side, on a Sunday afternoon. They may be able to take it if you check in advance.

Pleased to hear it Baths. I'm not too bad thanks. xx
Duvets are the best of bedding for those who are actually on the streets, since they're bulky to carry around and can take days to dry out if they get wet. (Street sleepers prefer sleeping bags, that can be easily rolled up during the day). Some night shelters for the homeless might be able to make use of them though. Try a phone call to Barnabus (0161 237 3223) or Mustard Tree (0161 228 7331) to see if they've got a use for your duvet.

Alternatively, animal shelters are often desperate for things like duvets. Try Millstream Animal Shelter (0161 683 4194)or The Heatons Animal Rescue Group (0161 975 0784).

Thanks Chris, I never thought about that. I did donate a duvet to an animal charity once before but couldn't remember which one. Will look at your suggestions. x
Keep it for the summer when it is too warm for your new winter duvet?
Question Author
Thanks Hopkirk but the one I have going spare is also a winter duvet. I have a summer duvet already. x
Most charity shops will not take duvets or pillow cases, although they will take bed sheets and pillow cases. "She who must be obeyed" puts our winter one in a sealable plastic bag, which can be pumped out to vacuum seal it. Then reverses the exercise in the Autumn with the summer one.
do you have kennels near you? They would definitely take the duvet. Alternatively, pop it on your local Freecycle site offering it as suitable for pet bedding. I am sure someone could use it. Good luck
We take ours to the local council depot, they have a storage place where they keep it and the animal shelter people collect it, they are really grateful for any blankets and duvets.
I too was going to suggest a local animal shelter, but wasn't sure if you were an animal lover or not.
sorry to be so late, I have just read your question about an old duvet. why not take it to the RSPCA for poorly horses or any other big animals, that what I do and they are really pleased.
If it's that lovely store it until needed.
