What do you want the phone to be used for mainly lilac? Calls, Text,or do you want to be on the social media sites on the web?
Just as Microsoft keeps updating the Windows operating system (with Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10, for example), Google keeps updating the Android operating system that's installed on mobile devices (such as phones and tablets). For some obscure reason, Google likes to use some rather odd names for the different versions of Android (or sometimes for groups of roughly similar versions).

The oldest version of Android that you might occasionally come across is 'Ice Cream Sandwich'. That was followed by 'Jelly Bean', 'KitKat' and 'Lollipop', with the latest version, 'Marshmallow', being released last October.

Some apps will only run on fairly recent versions of Android, so it usually makes sense to go for the most recent version, meaning that the phone with '5.1 Lollipop' might be the best option if you anticipate downloading lots of apps for it. However there are still plenty of users of KitKat and you shouldn't be too deterred from considering the phone using that version of Android if you're only likely to be using the apps which come pre-installed on it.

I am running a Samsung 5.1 Lollipop based phone and it is very good. The main differences are really in the graphics and menu options but if you go online for music or video content the Lollipop's 64 bit system is far better.
The next version may be "Lucky Charms" Buen.
or 'Down the Wall Street Drain" when Google get fined a few billion.....

Thankyou for replies.. Main use.. texting... some calls...internet... have been looking at Samsung J5 and A5.... they both seem to offer the same but are the different 5.1 amd 4.4.4 ... but the A5 is a £100 dearer? hmm dont really think it is worth it ? x
look at your usage by medium and then what they are offering in terms of usage - give yourself the best comfort package on the basis of 'if I have to overstep their limits, what will it cost me?' A 100 delta sounds a lot though.....
For the basic day-to-day use you describe, Kitkat (Android 4.4.4) should be fine. I can't think of any reason to fork out an extra hundred quid (but, being miserly, I wouldn't pay a hundred quid for a phone anyway!)
Lilac have at look at both phones in text mode in the retailers if you are using one. Look at the keyboard layout and text size. At my age it was a big concern.

Ok will go to shops tomorrow. Think I will go to Carphone Warehouse.. as want pay as you go.... another thing I am thinking of is using it abroad as well. One more question.. please...do they all charge for sending photos?
If you download the WhatsApp, you can send photos free.
you can send photos free with WeChat too & this is also free to download
Question Author
This is getting better... so I take it these are apps you download.? x
yes. Whatsapp & WeChat are both apps you can download. I personally find WeChat more user friendly but that is only my opinion. I also downloaded a fantastic satnav called Navmii which works without internet connection. Again, it is free to download/use but check how much data you have.
^^^ They are, indeed. Whatsapp is by far the better known of the two and, as you'll see here, runs on any version of Android from 2.1 onwards:

WeChat has loads of fans too though. It's an app where the system requirements (for the version of Android that you need) are unhelpfully given as 'varies with device' but I'd expect KitKat (and, indeed, probably earlier versions of Android) could handle it:

Yes, my phone ran KitKat when I first had WhatsApp.
My phone now runs on Lollipop and WhatsApp is great on it.
