Formatting Acer Notebook

I have an Acer Aspire Notebook - hardly used - with Windows XP plus Android option which I'd like to pass on to a 12 year old relative. I have progs like Picasa, AOL, sky, skype. Is it a complicated issue to format the thing to pass it on to him without my personal settings, so he can update it and install his own preferences or is it the sort of thing I need to have an expert do for me?
Many thanks

Did it come with recovery or restore disks?

Formatting means completely wiping - XP is no longer safe or supported by MS - a clean reload would be best. For a young person you need a heavyweight antivirus. if you can tell us the model number we can offer a best option.

Hi Tuvok - Is an Acer Aspire One - no cd/dvd drive for recovery/restore discs.
CrapatCryptics - label has "Aspire one D250-o8Qr"
its a very low spec so really not worth spending money on - I have some doubts as to whether it would meet the young adults needs. Ebuyer has a range of laptops / desktops from £150 upwards.
Argos ebay outlet will get you a good laptop for £150 to £200. Mine was from there and is 4 years old still going strong.
