On my old laptop I just used to plug in the lead to the camera and it came up on the screen asking me if I wanted to import the photos. They then went to the 'pictures' section on the desktop. With my new laptop I plugged it in and then to the camera and its doing all sorts of strange things, wanted me to sign up for Microsoft something or other, keeps going to black screen which I could not get out of, and now although its got the date I 'imported' the photos I can't find them anywhere and it says 'unable to import'. How can I just get my photos up without signing my life away and putting in passwords and new emails?

It also keeps mentioning a removable disc (which I haven't got as far as I know)

And keeps going on about getting them on other devices - which I don't need to do.
I think the 'removable disc' is your camera as identified by the computer, otherwise I understand your pain.

Well I tried again and it has imported them! No idea what I did different, so will see what happens next time I take some!
If you go to:
Control Panel > Default Programs
you will see an option to "change autoplay settings". This defines what action you want the computer to take when you connect a device or insert a CD/DVD into a drive. If you connect your camera and scroll down the list you can set it to do what you want.
