I have COPD, and the past 8 months it got worse, so was given a course of Steroids, 6 a day for 5 days which were brilliant.

After another CT scan 4 weeks ago, it was discovered I had slight Asbestos scarring on my lungs, which I assume from my younger days when I was in the building trade.

The problem I have, is when the Steroid courses finishes, about 8/10 days later, I feel dreadful again@ difficult breathing, tiredness, depressive, no appetite, and aches & pains..

I have 3 different inhalers & physio which help, but been told I cant take Steroids all the time because of side-affects.

Anybody had experience of this?

Trt, I was on steroids non stop for five months last year, eight weeks of which I was on a high dose (40mgs which is eight tablets).
I experienced many of the side effects including the moon face, buffalo hump, water retention (which affected my eyesight), mood swings, hot flushes, terrible indigestion requiring lots of prescribed medication, heavy legs, sleeplessness, and worst of all I developed steroid induced diabetes needing two nights in hospital hooked up to an insulin pump and IV fluids.
They can also affect bone density and as I was already diagnosed with osteoporosis, the medication I took for that was increased considerably.
I tailed off the steroids gradually and took my final one at the end of November and now ALL the side effects have now gone, apart from type 2 diabetes but even that isn't causing me any problem.
The reason I had to take steroids is different to you but I will probably have to take them again at some point.
For the good they do, for various ailments, it's worth putting up with the (temporary) side effects if you can. Your doctor know you best though so I'm sure they will advise you.
Best wishes x

Thanks for the info Ethan, very interesting.

I take 5gm, and I have never been on them non stop that long, just when required for 5 days, but the past week my Doctor told me to take, 6 everyday for 5 days, 5 for 1 day, 4 for 1 day, and so on till only 1 a day, and finish.

Have 2 days left so hoping this my work.

Thanks again for replying.

trt, I also have COPD and if I get a chest infection my doctor prescribes steroids to be taken exactly as you have described and they always do the trick for me.

Thanks Danny.

Can I ask how often you have to take them, meaning weeks, months etc when you get chest infections, and do they make you overall feel better?
Take 6 first day and then reduce by one each day until finished.I should add that these are taken together with antibiotics.Has always cleared the infection with no side effects.
