Watching the news a couple of days ago the newscaster said that postage stamps would go up by one pence, surely single penny, plural pence , or have things changed ?

No, nothing's changed. I find myself muttering "penny" when such statements are made.

I bet the newsreader does her bra size in metric so her chest seems bigger.
One of my pet hates....one pence. Oh! and people who say "pee" because "pence" is too much effort for them.
Pure sloppiness.
I think using "pee" came about in the early days of decimalisation to distinguish the new penny from the old penny. I flatly refused to use it.
Pee came in because it's written 5p , 10p etc.
...but when it was 10d, 5d, nobody said ten dee, five dee.
But we didn't use "d" for penny, as in 10d being called 10 dee.
I'm just glad that they dropped the "New Pee" a long time ago!
^^^quite! And we didn't say "One large curly el, three s's and eleven dee" for £1 3s 11d.......and the Yanks don't say 65 cee for 65 cents, so Z-M's explanation is a no-goer!
No problem for me. Language changes.
