We should demand that all workers should first speak fluent English, but then that would be of no use to those employers who want a pool of EU cheap labour.

What's to stop someone learning Polish, never mind English.
I agree that the ad in question is hardly illegal, as it asks for a particular skill, not someone of a particular nationality, gender etc.
Aside from that, the usual nonsense. Why could it not be the Express going online only. There's no justice :-)
As an aside why is the Express determined to force the coldest winter on record on us? They've been banging on about a big freeze off and on since last autumn. It's almost like if the Poles don't get you the snow will :-)

A fair point - but, if you advertise that someone must be bi-lingual, then you have to justify the reason, and advise why only a bi-lingual applicant will be considered.
If you want a secretary who is going to be communicating with your Polish customers on a daily basis, then fine - but it's not going to fly with someone who is going to do a bit of papering and painting.

We don't know that, do we. If I employed mainly Polish speaking people in whatever capacity, I would think it perfectly reasonable to seek other Polish speaking staff who can communicate adequately with the rest of the team. I don't believe it's illegal.

No we don't know that - and this is the entire root of the issue.
Unless you specifically advertise for a specific language as a pre-requisite, then any vague references 'desirable', would assist' and so on, are perfectly permissible, and it would not be provable that an immigrant applicant got the job over a UK applicant simply because they were an immigrant.
