Obviously such a position chimes with the views of the organisation to which she belongs.
She is hardly likely to say - "Personal freedom of speech and movement, and the ability of all levels of society to get involved in the issues that affect them directly, is higher than at any time in this county's history ..."
but that doesn't mean that the statement is not true - it is.

I believe that we are living in a time where opinions are robustly expressed and then attacked.
I see on AB that thread after thread on potentially controversial subjects are posted, with each 'side' having their say without problem.
The Internet has also democratised debate, with millions on blogs on political and social matters inviting debate.
Social media has also given voice to hundreds of millions around the world.

That statement contradicts itself.
I think the poor turn out in elections show apathy has always been a problem.
In real life more people are speaking out, they are worried about the future for sure. Here in ABerland people have reputations to keep and will never speak out about real problems if speaking about that problem makes them look even the tiniest bit anti Johnny Foreigner.

That fact that she is able to speak her mind freely rather proves that what she is saying is false.
The only thing stopping people like her voicing her opinion is not tyranny, it is their own insecurity that they will be ridiculed for being wrong.
Her attack on the police is not justified. Her opinion is probably borne out of ignorance. The Crown Prosecution Service decides who is finally prosecuted, not the police. To blame the Police for crimes not going to trial shows a deep misunderstanding of how the justice system works.

I don't think she is correct at all. Support for obviously racist and fascist concerns was unheard of years ago. But now people seem only too willing to support the Far Right.
I recall the disgust I felt when I first saw a candidate from the BNP on the voting lists a few years ago, in my Constituency.
I suppose what it shows is that the British innate racism never really went away....its just that people have less shame nowadays. The P word and the C word, and the N word are now back in fashion !
