Lent starts tomorrow and so does my new healthy eating I have thrown away all sweets and crisps out of the house giving up crisps and chocolate for lent. However today I had a really bad attack of chest pain in the centre of the back which I have had before and it went everywhere jaw etc it lasted for about 2 hours and it came in spasms I went to my mums was really anxious and she just sat and chatted to me and I had long periods where the pain went away. She was horrified when I told her what I had eaten. Yesterday went to a cafe with a friend and had double eggs on toast, a couple of caramel eggs in the afternoon, last night for tea haggis neeps and potatoes followed by raspberry trifle with cream. A big bag of square crisps with a tub of onion and garlic dip and this morning 6 pancakes for breakfast with butter and jam. I am wondering if all this pain is caused by something I have eaten it is so much better now I took cocodamol windeze omeprazole and gaviscon which seems to have got rid of most of it it is far worse when I lie down. I dont know whether it is my oesophagus or gallbladder the pain has now settled over the gallbladder area and I feel shivery

Come on gordie...you know that you have hugely overeaten.
I'm afraid you have brought this on yourself and only by adopting a much healthier diet can you expect to feel any better.
I know that you will be trying to give up chocolate and crisps. for Lent and full marks to you if you can do it for the whole six weeks, but you would be much better if you ate everything in moderation.
Six pancakes with butter and jam???? you really should have stopped at one, two at the most.
You have to get a grip on yourself. Nobody but you can fix this.

would overeating cause this type of pain, if so it is not worth it
Well Milady and indeed you have said it all, yes of course that is why you are hurting.

Only you can change this part of your life, you control what you eat and when and how much - don't buy the stuff in the first place.

May sound preachy and trust me I am in no way perfect about looking after myself either, but I accept I am in control of me.
No it is not.

Realistically, Gordie...what do you think could cause a gall bladder attack or oesophagus irritation?

It can only be what you put into your oesophagus and what then works its way down to your gall bladder.....and you cannot say that you didn't overeat, or indeed that you didn't know that you were eating the wrong things.
Everybody has told you this.

Yes well I am going to remember this the next time I am tempted to eat bad things. I eat at my parents 3-4 times a week they live 2 miles away and they eat very healthily baked potatoes, salad, sheperds pie fish twice a week with lots of vegetables. I never get indigestion problems when I eat there my mother said that when I eat on my own I eat rubbish as it is not food from their house.
Ask Mum to help you write up a decent shopping list and meal plan, am sure she'd help.
Mamya is giving you good advice there.
Plan meals and go shopping with a list.
And try never to go shopping when you are hungry.....you buy all the wrong things then.....then, inevitably, eat them.
Sorry if I have been sounding harsh and, like Mamya I am far from perfect about eating or anything else, but blaming other things is not the way forward.
Gordie - you know all this, you've been told dozens of times.

If you have gallbladder problems you need a low fat diet.
Your gall bladder was probably on the edge and your little feast has tipped it over. That is a very high fat diet to have eaten in 1 day.

As Ummmm has said you need to follow a low fat diet, I know as I am going through the same thing at the moment. It is not easy at all and things that you think are safe are not.

Shopping will be dead easy, lots of salad or vegetables lean meat like chicken or turkey, you can still have chilli’s or spag bols or sheperds pie just use turkey mince, for chilli I use 0% greek yoghurt instead of sour cream and then a sprinkle of low low fat cheese for flavour.

Basically no butter, oil, cream, bacon, etc etc

Its hard but you soon get used to it - just remind yourself how you feel today!

I think my trigger is anything with cream in it every time in the past I have had cream it has triggered it off
Avoid *all* dairy products if you want to reduce the frequency of gall-bladder attacks.
Eat little and often.....but only the 'right' things...

Gordie, get real, you have done this so many times now!
Using lent as a reason to eat healthily is a clear indication of your lack of commitment.

You have shared details of your poor diet and poor health management for such a long time it is difficult to find the wherewithal to sympathise nor empathise.
I can't comment on how many times you have done this, but it is not just cream that does it - its fat.

Yes you can eat a little but because your gallbladder is not working the next time you eat it you will be in agony.

If your willing to put up with this your braver than me - I ended up having to visit emergency Dr's at the weekend due to an attack!

Islay did you have pain in between your shoulder blades?
Question Author
I always give up something for lent. Last year I gave up chocolate for the full period without a slip up. It is a good spirtual discipline.
No mine is between my chestbone but shoulder blades is common
///....a good spiritual discipline///

It's the rest of you that needs working on gordie..
It's no good being spiritually disciplined for six weeks then reverting to
over -eating for the rest of the year, Gordie.
