Opinions On Series With Subtitles

I`m currently following 100 code, Spin and Occupied all on Sky - they do have subtitles but I think they are good enough to be worth the effort. May I ask the opinion of anyone else watching them. My previous favourite was Borgen which is allegedly coming back for a new series.

I don't mind them, currently watching Spin, Deutschland, Young Montelbano and The Bridge at various times. The Deutschalnd83 is indicative of how poor some subtitles are as I sprech a bit of deutsch, although the accents are odd.

I used to hate subtitles but then i watched a brilliant little film called Apocalypto, written, produced and directed by Mel Gibson - but not starring him. Since then i actually seek out foreign based tv series; Borgen, The Bridge, Killing, etc. By the way, Spin is on More 4, not Sky - thankfully:-)

I think programmes like these are very good. Most seem a lot better than similar UK series. The Bridge, Borgen and other Scandinavian serials do have to be concentrated on, but the acting makes this worthwhile. I also liked Spiral, the French crime series which was very gritty, and Montalbano.

We started watching the first episode of what was supposed to be another Scandinavian series about two or three weeks ago. I can't remember on which channel it was on, but it was set in some Arctic region where everyone spoke English in various accents. It was not until we saw a policeman with a badge saying 'Polis' that we realised that this was supposed to be Sweden, but was entirely in English. As soon as we realised that, we gave up on what may have been a reasonable story if it had been in the real language. Presumably for those who do not, or cannot read subtitles.

Being a regular user of sub-titles I really enjoy these programmes, and a nice change from British dramas.

I think the British TV broadcasters should take a look at which company's they use for the titles, as some on English TV are dire, and we don't get them on Catch-Up.

I enjoy Montalbano and the Scandi crime serials very much .
The subtitles are great and seem to 'fit' very well.
What I don't understand is why I have to have the volume up loud enough to hear as well as seeing the subtitles.
I've tried it turned off and it's just not the same.

I watch English-language programmes in subtitles because my hearing's not so good; so obviously I'm in favour.

The instant translation of running commentary (news or sports, for instance) can often go hilariously wrong. I remember the commentary at the Queen Mother's funeral saying people were being asked to observe a minute's violence.

Subtitles will never put me off watching a programme.

After a while I do not even realise it is subtitled. I remember recomending 'The Killing' to someone, only to be told off that it was subtitled and they wouldn't watch it. I honestly never noticed.

Why do the sub-titled company's vary so much.

I can understand it is difficult for a live show, but I cant see why a recorded programme cant keep up with the subtitles.

On the Chase quiz show, they are excellent, and sometimes the sub-titled answers comes up to some questions before the the sound ones.

I have to agree - if the plots are good enough you dont really seem to notice the subtitles so much - the ones i`ve mentioned are a pleasant change from a lot of the dross being broadcast here to often.

Love the foreign films that are subtitled, The Killing, Borgen, Wallander and both Montalbano series.
However, when they are on BBC News (I see it at the gym where there is no sound on), the misspellings are hilarious! Especially if the person speaking does not have English as their first language.

Young Montelbana is just so good that I totally forget I am reading subtitles. My favourite TV programme at present. At long last something good to watch on a Saturday night.
