Clearly all the problems of the EU are sorted so they can turn their attention to "vital" matters like these.

I my experience (starting with the EU ban on jam jars) I am very wary of these stories. Especially when reproduced by some sources who only quote one side of the story.

It might be guff.

The Express contacted the European Parliament?

On a Sunday?

Perhaps it was shut.

you mean all those bananas in Asda may actually be legal? PMSL!
// I am very wary of these stories. //

Which means you wouldn't be surprised if they were actually true, and that's the ridiculous thing - that they may well be. We just don't don't know.

The papers make up stupid nonsense about the Eu, but they really don't have to. It comes out with enough stupid nonsense of it's own.
These stories really get on my wick.
Ha, fooled em - have enough candles for the next few decades.

They can keep their paws off my Donkey Stones too.
I'm off to buy loads of candles tomorrow!
When and if were out of this circus will all of the silly ridiculous rules and laws revert back to how they used to be I wonder.
Only if Westminster has the will to be bothered. They're usually to busy imposing further restrictions of their own.
It does not ban candles, if you read it it is actually quite sensible.
It says that candle holders and supports should not be made of easily flammable materials. So you should not sell a cardboard candle holder for example. Also it is only a recommendation not a law.

Do people still believe the banana story is true???

That's actually quite shocking.

See Douglas is dragging the thread into the gutter again.
Think there may be other more important things to worry about
Candles or terrorism?
The primary function of the EU is as an international trade organisation.
It sets standards for construction and manufacture of goods from ships and aircraft to screws , printing ink and pens.
The security / military part is actually a very small part of the organisation but it is also the part that gets by far the most publicity.

/// The Express contacted the European Parliament?

Where does it say that?

Are you naive enough to believe that the Express contacted the European Parliament on Sunday or any other Sunday for that matter?
Question Author
not really SP, but the rules do cover curvature so it is partially correct.
AOG

The story was published on Sunday evening.

Simple deduction.

The origin of the banana story was that food producers approached their MEPs to create a standard for produce across the continent. That standard applies to grade A and grade B produce. It's what determines which products fall into each category and is used by our farmers when grading produce. It's only one of a number of metrics that have to be met when grading fruit and veg.

However, this was misinterpreted by 'interested parties'.

I'm always very wary when reading stories in the press about the EU.

www.fullfact.org is always useful in these situations.

/// The story was published on Sunday evening. ///

*** A four-page document straight from Brussels states the new rules are “to be met by European standards for candles, candle supports, containers and accessories” in accordance with official EU product safety
instructions. ***

And do you think that the Express would not have been made aware of the contents of that document, way before Sunday's printing deadline?

Simple deduction.
AOG

No, not really.
