For those who have never read or heard "A Child's Christmas In Wales" by Dylan Thomas, here is a recording of it:
Thank you Stuey - I never tire of hearing him speak.

Oh to have the talent to weave words so simply but magically, it's as if the words paint pictures on the inside of your eyelids.
You're right, Mamy. You can hear the hissing of the cats; feel the frigid wind blowing down Mumbles Road; barely see through the swirling snow; smell the smoke from the burning food in the oven; and hear the gong on the approaching fire-engine...He did have a way with words.
A true gift , yes.
I love his quote about Wales:

Land of my Fathers? My fathers can bloody well keep it!
Thanks Stuey ! Its been awhile since I heard that. Doesn't he speak the words so wonderfully !

I know the area of Swansea that he is talking about very well, and its very hilly indeed. If you tried to toboggan down in the snow, it was next to impossible to stop !

There is a cobbled street called Constitution Hill, that would give anything in San Francisco a run for its money. All the nobs used to live in big Victorian mansions up at the top, and so many horses were dying, trying to pull the carriages up the Hill, that they installed a steam-driven cable way instead. You can still see traces of it today.

lying on a single bed which comprised of an old double mattress doubled over and tied up with string to fit the single bed - no wonder I have a bad back today. but you were lucky to have a bed of your own. Slept with my mother and sister 3 of us in one double bed until I was about 11 years old. Now I lie on a king size bed and couldn't stand anyone near me.
Some hill. One almost expects Steve McQueen to go barreling down it in his Mustang.
Wonderful memories people have, I remember going sledging down the slope at the back of the golf course. Making toast on the fire with a toasting fork. Christmas day going to church, coming back to a suit case for my brother, sister and me, with our presents in.
Hanging up pillowcases at christmas! Mum making her own mince pies and sausage rolls, the smell, hmmmm! And we went carol singing round the flats.

on Christmas eve going to the village square and singing carols around the tree my dear old dad 's voice above everyone else x
Copies of the Dandy and/or Beano rolled up in you sock along with numerous other tiny gems such as money, nuts, and perchance a spanking new Dinky toy.
Actually Stuey, Constitution Hill is used for bike racing these days :::

( Dai McQueen is the one in yellow ! )

It appears to be raining or have been raining...Isn't this very unusual for Wales?
lol Stuey !
Huddled round the fire, enjoying the warmth, when our mam could afford coal, and trudging round the streets, trying to find wood or anything to burn, when she couldn't.
That reminds me: holding a sheet of newspaper across the front of the fire in order to create a draft to get the fire burning. Also, sending your letters to Santa up the chimney.
The Coalman coming with his horse and cart along with the rag and bone man.
^All that stuff would be considered as living in criminal poverty now but, boy, were we happy. (most of the time)
And every Sunday the oatcake man would come bicycling around peddling his wares on Stafford Crescent, Clayton, Newcastle-Under-Lyme.
