Weekend Break in Canada

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Few countries in the world can boast as much choice to its visitors as Canada. If your passion is skiing, sailing, history searching or simply indulging in exceptional cuisine, this country has it all. The true diversity of beauty is portrayed in Western Canada while the Eastern side of the country mixes the flavour and charm with a trendy atmosphere.

Skiing in Canada:

When planning a ski trip you should stay flexible and open-minded, to ensure you don’t freeze your finances while enjoying an assortment of activities during your stay. By leaving it till the last moment to book a ski trip while in this vast snow covered country you will find the best deals at either end of the season, so if you’re willing to travel before Christmas on into spring you will find that prices for lift passes, flights and accommodation are usually much lower.

If you’re looking for the best places to ski you should consider the Rocky Mountains in BC and Alberta or the Laurentian mountains in Ontario and Quebec. In Canada the winters are long and we like to take advantage of them in any way possible; so there are smaller ski hills everywhere, even on the flat prairies of Saskatchewan. You will find river valleys and large hills turned into ski hills if there are no mountains available.

Places to visit:

Ottawa is the capital of Canada and is the country’s fourth largest city. Boasting rich culture and heritage it’s no surprise this city is one of the most popular visitor spots renowned for its excellent lifestyle. The city is characterised by a continental climate, which ranks seventh in the coldest capitals of the world- so when visiting this picturesque place you should always remember your gloves and scarf. Ottawa winters are largely dominated by an astonishing amount of snow, while the summers are warm and short.

Quebec city is another popular destination in the east of the country. To the casual observer, Québec bears a striking resemblance to Europe, with its charming old buildings, cobblestone streets and imposing stone walls, not to mention the intriguing sounds of the French language overheard everywhere you go. The entire walled Vieux-Québec (Old City) has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outside the walls, visitors flock to historically significant spots such as the Plains d'Abraham to see the delights awaiting them. Visitors will also find an abundance of dining establishments that offer everything from quick bites like the peculiar Québécois poutine (French fries topped with fresh cheese curds and brown gravy), to fine meals at renowned restaurants such as Laurie Raphaël and L'Initiale.

Things to do:

Canada promotes itself as a country of peace, so what could be more peaceful than surrounding yourself with nature and wildlife. Take a sunset kayaking tour from Gabriola Island, which offers a multitude of treats – from the extravagant display in the sky to the eye-level view of otters, seals, bald eagles and many more fascinating species.

Take a sleigh ride in the snowy darkness- guided through the hidden forests and open fields. Before setting off on your snowy adventure, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate –warming you up before braving the cold for the experience of a lifetime. After your sleigh ride through the breathtaking sights you will have worked up an appetite- so be prepared to enjoy a fondue dinner to warm you up, but if that isn’t enough a seat by the wood lit fire is sure to do the trick.

All over Canada, you will find so many things to do, see and experience, you may not have enough time to do everything. The country is full of interesting places, where one can easily pass many hours enjoying the entertainment that can be found in Canada.
