PLACES TO STAY IN AUCKLAND

Our son has recently moved to Auckland and we are going over to stay Jan/Feb. Can anyone recommend a good area to look for accomodation that is on the coast and also near to restaurants. Our son lives in Parnell in a house share so we don't want to be to far away from that area.

Parnell's quite expensive, but there are places to stay, eg

You might find slightly cheaper in Newmarket, which is close by. Both are ok for restaurants. Do you plan to hire a car? You might need one for getting around; buses aren't great. You're never more than a mile or two from the coast in Auckland. Beaches start a mile or so east of Parnell - others on the North Shore, but that's a bit of a drive from Parnell.
