I've found one source that doesn't specify a validity and three that say 6 months at date of entry.
The latter include the Mexican Embassy in London so I assume it's right. The wording is curious though:
'It is recommended to travel with a passport valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry into Mexico.'
which suggest it's either not mandatory or - more likely - a mistranslation.
