Find out what budget airlines operate from your nearest airport/s as the first step and go on their websites. If you don't mind traveling a bit further simply type 'cheap flights to Rome' into a search engine and you will see a myriad of websites. But don't forget the cost of your petrol in getting to the more distant airport.

If you want to use a scheduled airline, try this site
http://www.justtheflight.co.uk/scheduled-fligh ts/destinations.html
This will at least give you an idea of who flies to your destination, but then check the airlines own website, as the fares can be cheaper.

Ryanair fly to Rome so go into their website and check if they fly from near you. It's easy booking tickets with them.

I can't believe people have to ask a question like this, this is what Google is for.

I'm sure you've heard of different airlines, search for their sites and then look for what you want. Search for flight booking in Google and you'll get a load of links in seconds

A tad harsh Cakeboy - the key concept the questionner wants assurance about is that they have never booked a flight before - always used a travel agent.
Evedawn, also try http://www.ba.com because if you book aflight far enough in advance it can be very affordable, and you don't have to survive a rugby scrum to get to your seat. Oh, and you get a bacon butty or equivalent.
