No you don't, but in these security conscious times it may be worth carrying some I.D. on you in case you are asked for it.
The answer to your question is: "Yes, sometimes." To fly with Ryanair from Bournemouth to Prestwick, for example, you must show pictorial evidence of who you are. This means that - if you do not have a photo-style Driving Licence (and many people don't) - they insist on seeing your passport. Only these two documents are acceptable to Ryanair.

As Meadowgrover suggests, you'd be well advised to have your passport with you, but you could check with the individual carrier before leaving home whether it is necessary.

A friend of mine was recently refused passage on an Easy Jet flight from London to Glasgow because he had the incorrect ID. He had a paper driving licence and a photo ID that represents MOD site clearence but these were not acceptable !!!
