I have Googled this but I've been told, althought I don't know if the source is reliable, that sometimes it's a lot cheaper to do this on the train. I've bought an advance ticket from N.Wales to Glasgow so I know there are different train companies involved. I haven't had to pay for my ticket so don't mind paying the upgrade. I have to change at Crewe. Any advice anyone? Thank you.

The only type of discounted First Class upgrade that can be purchased on some trains is the 'Weekend First' offer which some (but not) all train operators provide. It's only available on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. Any journey from North Wales to Glasgow is likely to commence with the services of Arriva Train Wales, who don't offer Weekend First....

The change at Crewe would take you onto a Virgin Trains service, where the policy is as follows:
"Upgrades are priced between £10 and £25 on Virgin Trains routes, you should talk to the Train Manager for prices for your journey"

Thanks Chris. I'm thinking I'll only have 10 minutes to change trains/platforms in Crewe, so I wouldn't have thought I'd have time to find a manager! What could I do?
'Train Manager' is just a posh name for a conductor. You can find him after you've boarded the train.
or her :)
Good point, Bednobs ;-)

You can see some sample upgrade prices here, Horeshoes:

Looking at those, I'd guess that you'd be charged either £15 or £20
