I need to renew my passport but would like to keep my old one as a souvenir of my trip to Timbucto. Is this possible.

Yes. With a corner cut off to make it invalid.
Yes. They just cut the corner off and send it back to you.
Yes.
The Passport office snip off a corner of the cover but they still return it to you through the post.
Yes,just to confirm OG & ummmm's answer.
I am 70 so have quite a few expired passports(with the corner cut off). It's fun to look at all the stamps in them, and see where you have been.Sadly since are(were?) in the EU there are no stamps for those countries any more.
If you're in the UK, yes, they do send you your old one back, with your new one, clipped on the top edges, so you don't have to worry.

That's great, Thanks everyone
It comes back separately from the new one, the new one comes first I think but don't panic, the old one is a few days later. I love looking at old stamps.

I like looking at my old stamps. My wife got a stamp on the way back from Majorca, she mythered the Immigration man so much it did it just to get rid of her!!!
You'll get the old one back in Ireland also with the corner clipped off, your extra passport photos they no longer need and a little piece of paper reminding you to immediately write your signature on the third page
