And yet there seems more of a public outrage that Trump is denying access for 90 days to 7 countries that the US state department lists as state sponsors of terror.

He is making more problems that he tries to solve. The number of terrorist activities in his country is rather small especially compared to other violent crimes.
However I don't see thst the legislation can be legitimately slung for religious discrimination reasons. It is related to certain countries who are known to have exported extremist individuals. It is simply unfortunate that the perpetrators all seem to be influenced by a particular religion.

Many, many more Americans dies at the hands of other Americans, then have every been killed by Muslims, in the history of the country.
If Trump was really serious about protecting the American people, he would do something about gun ownership.
But his core vote seems to come from the kind of redneck types that are most likely to own guns, so that is a non-starter I suppose.

That's the problem with using 'shorthand' phrases as a soundbite for the electorate. He may say "Muslims" because that's the group the public associate terrorism with, and hardly surprising, but the legislation is trying to target countries whose citizens are higher risk of being terrorists; not Muslims.
Sometimes, for practical reasons, one can not follow through fully on what one would like to do. Alienating Saudi Arabia would have massive consequences which is why they are ommited from the list. I've no doubt that isn't something DT considers ideal. The trouble is that he doesn't see the rest of the list also causes more problems than it is worth.
