Can fizzy wine be transported in a suitcase in the hold of an aircraft without the cork coming out?

I would not risk it. Too much turbulence may shake it so much it explodes.
Just had a good 'google around', can't find anything official but looked at about 10 Q&A sites and everyone says there is no problem. I would think your biggest problem will be the handling of the suitcase so pack it well.
Wrap it in tons of cling film???

Thanks all - when we have been given fizzy wine to bring home previously, we have always drunk it before flying!
Yes. Make sure you bury it in the middle of the suitcase so that it`s not exposed to knocks from the outside.

Thanks again. I'm really rather hoping to hear from someone who has had actual expreience of doing this (positive or negative!)

Wrap some clothes around it and keep it away from the outsides of the case.

Yes - we've regularly transported bottles of still wine that way, without problems (so far). I'm pleased to hear that the increased pressure difference doesn't cause the fizzy ones to push the cork out, though.
The hold is pressurised so it`s no different to transporting the bottles of champagne that are served in the cabin. It`s knocks that are the main thing to avoid, hence wrapping well.

Well, that's something I've learned today. I didn't realise the hold was pressurised.
