// Since Muslim-majority Turkey formally launched its membership bid in 2005, the EU has opened 15 chapters out of the 35 required to join the bloc.

So far only one chapter has been completed, with disagreements over Turkey's human rights record an obstacle for many EU states. //

At that rate, it will be the year 3000 before they join.
^Bet it won't.
IDS was in a rant on TV earlier today apparently Sir John Major has let the cat out of the bag saying Turkey could be in the EU in 10 years' time. IDS said “there is no conclusion you can draw from this, except that David Cameron is colluding with the EU and lying to the British people”
Naomi, I agree....

Whoever within Europe even considered the prospect of Turkey joining the EU needs their brains tested.
I think that could be most of them Naomi
Bertrum, I think you could be right.
It`ll be at least 10 years before Turkey gains entry to the EU (if at all). Just because the powers that be are talking about it, that doesn`t mean that it is going to happen any time soon.
'Soon' isn't the issue. 'At all' is the issue.

Quite, Naomi.
Well, at all could be the issue. It may never happen
It may never happen - but then again it might and probably will. Who would chance it? Not me.

Not that I need any persuading but the timing of this announcement might sway a few waverers. Less than 12 hours before the polls open. Can't wait!
Yes, but is it being announced? I haven't heard anything at all about this except on here.
David Cameron was once the country's biggest supporter, arguing in 2014 that allowing Turkey to join was "vital for our economy, vital for our security and vital for our diplomacy".

"At that rate, it will be the year 3000 before they join." - I've cracked it! Gromit is the PM!
TTT, //I've cracked it! Gromit is the PM! //

No he isn't. He's just a selective 'googler'. ;o)
Cameron only said it a few days ago so there was no need to Google anything. And the year 3000 reference was of course intentional.
