Does Germany have an equivalent sort of hotel to Travelodge? Nothing flash, no breakfast, just room.

though you may have thought that the Germans would have mastered the concept of camps, most of them are foreign, the likes of Accor and Ibis come to mind....Landidyll comes to mind though for regional, rural inns....
Ibis in Germany is reasonable
If the Balladins chain have a presence there they are good and reasonably priced
//though you may have thought that the Germans would have mastered the concept of camps//
A feeble attempt at humour? Would you like a history lesson DTC?

Well, with your specialization in American history, you will no doubt be aware that the first modern concentration camps were created in 1838 by the United States government, led by President Van Buren, who decided to remove the native Cherokee population from their lands and place them all in concentration camps. Does that sound familiar?
Examples continue to the present day, as you will also know, until Guantanamo.
InterCity Hotels are a budget chain, with hotels in central locations (usually very close to the main railway station) in nearly all German cities:

Accor trades under different names (including Ibis, Novotel, Mercure and many others), with each brand name associated with a different type of hotel (from 'budget' through to 'luxury'). Rather than having to work through lots of different websites though, you can search across all of their brands here:

N H Hotels are also reasonably priced:

Steigenberger are a good brand with a sub brand called Intercity who are like Ibis. There are tons of Sheratibs and NH, and Holiday Inn brands. If you go to a site like ebookers.com you will see all choices in the city you want.
